To produce reliable bearings for aircraft applications requires the usage of super-clean steel with proper chemical composition. In other words, standard 100Cr6 steel (or – even worse – the equivalent GCr15 steel) is not adapt at all to guarantee the proper resistance to fatigue and to wear that is mandatory for such tough environment. In USA and in Europe special materials have been developed for these requirements, both for the bearing rings and for the rolling elements.
